Exaltation of the Venerable and Life Giving Cross
Historical Event in 326 AD
September 14
After finding the three crosses of Calvary, St. Helena (the mother of Emperor St. Constantine) had Patriarch St. Macarius determine the True Cross. This was done by touching a dying woman with each cross with the True Cross healing her.

The icon shows Patriarch Macarius elevating the Cross for all to venerate. He is shown with his bishop’s vestments and a halo radiating from the God-given grace within showing that he is a Saint of the Church. He saints inside the ‘throne’ of a bishop. The cross is in the traditional Eastern style with Pilate’s plaque at the top and the footrest at the bottom.

Two deacons hold candles to honor and reflect the glory of the Cross St. Helena is shown to the lower left in royal attire. Buildings in the background show that the scene is outside while numerous clergy and laity join St. Helena in veneration.
