Theophany (Baptism of the Lord; Epiphany)
Matthew 3, Mark 1:1-9, Luke 3:21-22, and John 1:31-34
January 6
Christ is shown being baptized (with the distinctive Trinitarian halo) by John the Baptist on the left. John stares at the Holy Spirit descending from Heaven in the form of a dove and hears the words of God the Father clearly identifying Christ has His Son. This event is the theophany or manifestation of Christ to the world and marks the start of His active public ministry.

Angels extend their covered hands to receive Christ. This covering is a symbolic sign of respect and reverence which was practiced in Byzantium when receiving gifts from the emperor.

Christ blesses the river Jordan in the customary hand position of a bishop. The river is personified by a small winged man.
